Planning a surprise marriage proposal in France is exciting — but when you are travelling from abroad, finding the right place and the right photographer can make the whole experience a little more complicated. Make sure you find a local photographer who knows well the area and can speak both English and French to help you out!
For this proposal, the setting was Château des Bachelards in Fleurie, in the heart of the Beaujolais vineyards. A beautiful place for a quiet and meaningful moment, surrounded by vines and the landscapes of Beaujolais.
And, of course, there was one very important secret to keep 😉

A romantic proposal in the Beaujolais vineyards
Just north of Lyon, the landscape changes quickly from the city to rolling hills, small villages and rows of vines stretching across the countryside. Fleurie is one of the Beaujolais famous wine villages, and Château des Bachelards sits right in this landscape.
The estate has a long history and today it is known for its organic approach to viticulture. The château and its surrounding vineyards offer such a beautiful intimate atmosphere for a proposal. Here you can enjoy an exceptional lunch served at the table in the beautiful gardens.
For a couple visiting France, it can also be a lovely way to combine a proposal with a few days discovering the Beaujolais wine region.
Keeping a marriage proposal a surprise
Photographing a surprise proposal is a little different from photographing an ordinary couple session.
The person proposing knows what is about to happen. The other person doesn’t.
So my job is not only to take beautiful photographs. It is also to make sure that my presence doesn’t give anything away.
Before the proposal, we can talk through the plan together: where you would like the moment to happen, what you imagine doing beforehand, where I can position myself and how we can make everything feel completely natural.
The aim is simple: you concentrate on the person you love. I take care of your memories.

The moment you have been waiting for
There is something very special about photographing a proposal.
There is the anticipation just beforehand.
The question.
That tiny moment of realisation.
And then the reaction.
I’m by your side to tell much more than the story of someone getting down on one knee. My images will preserve the emotions around it: the surprise, the laughter, the tears, the hugs and everything that happens in those few minutes afterwards.
I’m here to plan it all with you so it unfolds just as you imagine it!

Moments to cherish forever…
Once the secret is out, there is no more need to hide the camera or worry about keeping the surprise. We can simply enjoy the moment and take a little time for some photographs together.
I love these portraits to remain very natural. No complicated posing or long photoshoot required.
We can walk, talk, explore the surroundings and I capture candid images along the way.
We can even go explore further. The vineyards and countryside around Fleurie offer plenty of opportunities for this kind of relaxed couple session.

Planning a surprise proposal in Beaujolais from abroad
If you are travelling to France from another country, organising a surprise proposal can involve a few extra questions.
Where should we do it? What time will have the best light?
How can the photographer stay discreet? What happens if the weather changes?
How do we coordinate everything without giving the surprise away?
This is where having a local, English-speaking photographer can make things easier.
I am based in the Beaujolais region and photograph couples, families and weddings around Beaujolais, Lyon and the wider Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
For a surprise proposal, we can plan the photography together before you arrive. You don’t need to know the area, speak perfect French or work everything out on your own. My role is to help you create a plan that feels simple and natural — and then be there quietly when the important moment happens.
Why Château des Bachelards?
Château des Bachelards is a wine estate in Fleurie, less than an hour from Lyon, surrounded by the Beaujolais vineyards. The estate offers wine experiences and special outdoor lunch experiences.
It is a beautiful option if you are looking for something more intimate than a proposal in the city.
You could combine the proposal with a wine tasting, a meal or a stay in the Beaujolais area, turning one special moment into a whole romantic getaway.

Other places for a surprise proposal in Beaujolais
And also, sometimes the best location is somewhere that simply feels like you. you don’t necessarily need a famous château or a spectacular landmark.
A vineyard at the right time of day. A quiet country road.
A beautiful view over the Beaujolais hills like Mont Brouilly or Terrasses de Chiroubles. A typical village you discovered together like Oingt or Ternand.
A place connected to a particular memory. Or a location you’ve chosen because you know your partner will love it.
As a photographer based in the Beaujolais, I can help you think about the setting, the light and the practicalities of keeping the proposal secret — whether you have already chosen your location or are still looking for the right place.

Planning your proposal near Lyon
If you’re staying in Lyon, you don’t necessarily have to stay in the city for your proposal.
The Beaujolais vineyards offer a very different atmosphere while remaining close enough to combine with a trip to Lyon. It’s a perfect location for couples who love nature, wine and the French countryside. And if Château des Bachelards isn’t the right place for your plans, there are many other possibilities throughout Beaujolais.
The location doesn’t have to be famous. It just has to feel right for you.

Yes, Beaujolais is such a stunning location! If you are looking for vineyards, countryside and a quieter atmosphere, Beaujolais villages offer a very different setting from central Lyon and are well suited to a romantic getaway.
We’ll talk about a backup plan before the day. Depending on the location, we can adapt the timing, choose another nearby spot or find a sheltered alternative while keeping the proposal itself a surprise.
